About Pressure intensifiers

General function of hydraulic pressure intensifiers

A pressure intensifier is a free-piston machine with a drive piston and a working piston that are rigidly connected to each other. The larger piston is the inlet piston (primary side), and the smaller piston is the outlet piston (secondary side). In the pressure intensifier, the pressures are transformed from the primary side to the secondary side, increasing the pressure from a lower drive pressure to a higher working pressure. The forces and stroke lengths of both pistons are the same. The pressure increase is inversely proportional to the ratio of the piston areas, which is called the transmission ratio: Output pressure = Input pressure x (Area of the input piston / Area of the output piston).

Hydraulic pressure intensifiers: Function and advantages

Our hydraulic pressure intensifiers are specifically designed for operation with standard hydraulic components at working pressures between 200 bar and 350 bar.

Pressure boosters offer high efficiency and adaptability in high-pressure applications, as they are available in various pressure ratios and in both standard and custom designs.

How it works: The pressure of the hydraulic fluid is applied to a larger piston. As this larger piston moves, the force is transferred to a smaller piston. Due to the smaller surface area of the second piston, the same force is converted into a higher pressure on the secondary side.

Advantages: Our pressure intensifiers offer efficient power and velocity transmission. They maximize the performance of your hydraulic system by increasing pressure without requiring additional energy sources. This results in improved system efficiency and reliability in your applications.

How pressure translators can improve your application

The pressure intensifier converts hydraulic pressure on the primary side into a higher pressure on the secondary side. This makes it possible to apply four times the pressure to a hydraulic consumer, even though the machine’s hydraulic system operates at a relatively low pressure.

The pressure intensifier can also control the pressure increase permanently or via a control valve. When using pressure intensifiers, you should ensure that the pressure switches are correctly set and that the operating conditions and tolerances are monitored using a pressure gauge.

Technical specifications of the Pressure intensifiers

To design a pressure intensifier for a defined stroke and delivery volume, information on the medium, compressibility and primary pressure is required. Speak to our engineers for the correct specification of your Pressure intensifiers.

Application areas of Pressure intensifiers

Function and use in testing applications

A servo-hydraulically driven hydraulic cylinder (primary cylinder) can generate any desired piston rod travel profile. This travel profile creates any desired pressure gradient in the high-pressure chamber, which can then be applied as test pressure to a test specimen.

Other applications

  • Presses: In hydraulic presses, to increase the required pressure and thus generate greater forces.
  • Punching machines: For precise punching processes that require high pressure.
  • Hydraulic packaging machines: For increasing the pressure in machines used for packaging and compressing materials.
